Discover Tree Trunk Gorge!
This 10-15km ride winds up and down through the classic beech forest of the Central North Island. You ride over two impressive gorges on the Tongariro River, through forest land and across a number of smaller streams. Try and name all the native fauna that lines the trail and listen for the birds along the way.
Challenge yourself with a short and steep climb, a number of wooden bridge crossings, sharp corners and fun downhills. With the thick forest covering, this ride is perfect for all weather conditions! With a few river crossings all times of year, be prepared to get wet feet!
Allow 1 ½ – 2 hours for this ride, or longer if you wish to stop for a picnic lunch along the way!

Although you will feel totally wilderness, the trail is only a 20 minute drive from Turangi.

The trail is undulating with rutted hill climbs, descents, stream crossings and rocky terrain. If you have bike riding experience, it is a perfect level of challenege.

Tree Trunk Gorge is rideable on your own, but riding with one of our experienced guides will add another dimension to your journey. Your guide will tell you all about the nature you are riding through, the local flora and fauna, and the stories from the area. We also know all the tips and tricks for the trail, so we will set you up for success on the bike for how to tackle any tricky bits!
For an action-packed day, why not combine your mountain bike ride with a white water rafting adventure on the Tongariro River? Tree Trunk Gorge will take you all the way down to Potu Intake, where you will swap your bike for a paddle and begin your rafting adventure after a well deserved lunch.
